This 50-bed general hospital provides 100,000 residents year-round access to quality healthcare.
Background
Northern Ghana is home to 2.5 million people scattered across a remote and rural area that comprises roughly one-third of the nation’s area. The Northern Region of Ghana is critically underserved by doctors, most of whom live in the Region’s capital, Tamale. As a result, none of the clinics in the region even have a doctor. Medicine is inadequate. Medical equipment is in short supply and poor repair.
The Ghana Rural Integrated Development organization (GRID) and the Northern Empowerment Association (NEA), a Ghanian non-governmental agency, together form a remarkable partnership based on shared values, mutual respect and an abiding commitment to a cause greater than ourselves — to assist poor communities to meet their basic needs in a sustainable manner. For over 30 years, we have worked side by side to help Northern Ghana’s poor through our many development projects.
Impact
After years of work, this project has broad and enthusiastic support from local health personnel, government representatives, traditional community leaders and from the many thousands of people it serves.
A volunteer team of North American and Ghanaian engineers and architects planned and built a fully equipped, 50-bed general hospital that serves as an essential healthcare hub for the Northern region. It offers:

- OB/GYN and prenatal clinics
- chronic disease management clinics
- diagnostic imaging services
- 24/7 emergency services
We estimate that the hospital serves 47,000–53,000 patient visits annually including as many as:
- 8,000 emergency cases
- 1,000 births
- 1,000–3,000 surgeries
- 4,000 inpatient visits

Leyaata Hospital is a model of healthcare for all of Ghana, in five key areas:
Patient care
All patients, regardless of ethnicity, status, gender, or faith, are treated with respect, compassion, and appropriate urgency.
Financial sustainability
This has been accomplished through income-generating activities, partnerships with expatriate specialists, and our long-established relationship with Ghana’s Ministry of Health, allowing the hospital in Carpenter to become a financially sustainable institution.
Restful recovery
The Leyaata Hospital is a sanctuary: a place of peace, rest, and healing. This allows those who are ill to recover in a watchful environment with the help of medical experts rather than being immediately discharged to villages that have little or no access to professional healthcare.
Diagnostics
The hospital has high-quality medical equipment that allows for swift and accurate diagnosis of critical illnesses. Early diagnosis is a critical element to proper treatment.
