Geographical background
In a recent survey in 30 villages, 65% of the women interviewed reported that are living below the Ghanaian Extreme Poverty Level set at GHS982.00 per annum (about $87 in US dollars).
Real needs
No job opportunities for women unless they move to the city or large centers where they will typically find work that involves carrying heavy loads of goods from place to place.
Integrated approach
Women are placed into co-ops and given peanut seeds, plus the money to purchase labour for clearing land and three goats. They are provided with training and have meetings to discuss challenges and develop solutions together.
Development outcome
5,500 women became self-sufficient and are taking on positions of influence in their communities.
